About

Agatino Rizzo is assistant professor of urban planning and design at Qatar University, College of Engineering, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning. Dr. Rizzo is member of the Italian Professional Association of Engineers and Planners and the International Society of City and Regional Planners (based in The Netherlands).

At the graduate level dr. Rizzo teaches urban and regional land use planning and design, planning theory, GIS, and research methods in urban planning (Master of Urban Planning and Design) while at the undergraduate level he supervises the senior project studio (Bachelor of Architecture). Until 2010 dr. Rizzo worked as senior lecturer of urban and regional planning for Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor, Malaysia where he also headed a research program investigating Mega-City Regions in South East Asia.

In 2004 dr. Rizzo pursued a Master in engineering and architecture and in 2008 he successfully completed a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning both at University of Catania (Italy). From 2006 to 2008 he was guest researcher at Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (Germany), and Alvar Aalto Foundation (Finland). In 2009 dr. Rizzo was Visiting Lecturer at Estonia Academy of Art (EKA) in the frame of the master program in urban studies.

From 2004 to 2012 he has worked for several private firms and international organisations in the fields of urban design, urban renewal, and metropolitan strategic planning. Dr. Rizzo has also taken part to many international design competitions in the field of urban planning and design.

His main research interests include global and mega-city regions, transnational urbanism, and urban strategic planning in developed and developing countries. From 2008 dr. Rizzo is correspondent for the architectural magazine “Compasses” (Dubai).
